What Is SPECT Imaging?
SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography) is an advanced nuclear imaging technique that creates detailed 3D images of how organs and tissues function inside your body. Unlike traditional X-rays or CT scans that show structure, SPECT imaging shows how organs are working in real-time by tracking the movement of a small amount of radioactive tracer through your body.
Why Is It Needed?
SPECT imaging is crucial for diagnosing various conditions including heart disease, bone disorders, brain abnormalities, and cancer. It helps doctors see blood flow patterns, detect tumors, identify infection sites, and assess organ function. This information is vital for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring disease progression.
How Does It Work?
A small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into your bloodstream. This tracer concentrates in specific organs or tissues. The gamma camera rotates around you, capturing images from multiple angles. These images are then processed by computer to create detailed 3D views of the internal structures and their function.
