What Is MUGA Scan (Cardiac Function)?
A MUGA scan, also called a gated blood pool scan or radionuclide ventriculography, is a highly accurate test that measures how well your heart is pumping blood with each beat. It calculates the ejection fraction (EF) - the percentage of blood pumped out of the heart's left ventricle with each contraction. Normal EF is 50-75%.
Why Is It Needed?
MUGA scans are essential for patients undergoing chemotherapy (some cancer drugs can affect heart function), evaluating heart failure, assessing heart damage after heart attack, diagnosing cardiomyopathy, and monitoring heart function in various cardiac conditions. It's the gold standard for measuring ejection fraction.
How Does It Work?
Red blood cells are labeled with a radioactive tracer (Tc-99m) and reinjected into your bloodstream. The gamma camera takes multiple images synchronized with your heartbeat (using ECG leads), creating a movie of your beating heart. The computer calculates ejection fraction and evaluates wall motion abnormalities.
