What Is Parathyroid Scan?
A parathyroid scan (sestamibi scan) is a nuclear medicine test that identifies overactive parathyroid glands. The parathyroid glands (usually four small glands behind the thyroid) control calcium levels. When one or more become enlarged or develop an adenoma, they produce too much parathyroid hormone, leading to high blood calcium levels.
Why Is It Needed?
This scan is crucial for patients with hyperparathyroidism, elevated blood calcium, kidney stones, bone pain, or osteoporosis caused by parathyroid problems. It helps surgeons locate the abnormal parathyroid tissue before surgery, making the procedure more precise and less invasive.
How Does It Work?
You receive an injection of Tc-99m sestamibi, a radioactive tracer that is absorbed by both thyroid and parathyroid tissue. Images are taken immediately and again after 2-3 hours. The thyroid gland washes out the tracer quickly, but abnormal parathyroid tissue retains it, allowing clear visualization of the problem area.
