What Is Lung Perfusion Scan (V/Q Scan)?
A lung perfusion scan (often combined with ventilation scan as V/Q scan) evaluates blood flow through your lungs. The perfusion scan shows which areas of the lungs are receiving blood, while the ventilation scan shows which areas are receiving air. Comparing these images helps diagnose pulmonary embolism and other lung conditions.
Why Is It Needed?
This scan is essential for diagnosing pulmonary embolism (blood clots in lungs), evaluating chronic blood clots, assessing lung function before surgery, detecting regional lung blood flow abnormalities, and evaluating patients who cannot have CT angiography due to kidney problems or contrast allergies.
How Does It Work?
For perfusion: Tiny particles labeled with radioactive tracer (Tc-99m MAA) are injected into a vein. These particles temporarily lodge in lung capillaries, showing blood flow distribution. For ventilation: You breathe in radioactive gas or aerosol, which shows air distribution in lungs. The gamma camera takes images from multiple angles, creating a complete picture of lung function.
