What Is HIDA Scan (Hepatobiliary)?
A HIDA scan (hepatobiliary iminodiacetic acid scan) or cholescintigraphy is a nuclear medicine test that tracks the production and flow of bile from the liver through the gallbladder and into the small intestine. It evaluates how well these organs are functioning and can detect blockages or abnormalities.
Why Is It Needed?
HIDA scans are crucial for diagnosing acute cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation), chronic gallbladder disease, bile duct obstruction, bile leaks after surgery, biliary dyskinesia (poor gallbladder emptying), and evaluating abdominal pain of unknown cause. It's especially useful when ultrasound results are unclear.
How Does It Work?
After fasting, you receive an injection of Tc-99m labeled HIDA tracer that is taken up by liver cells and excreted into bile. The gamma camera tracks the tracer as it moves through the biliary system. If needed, CCK (a hormone that makes the gallbladder contract) may be given to measure gallbladder ejection fraction. The test shows if bile flows normally or if there are blockages.
